Two androgynous figures hug on the side of Dalston Lane ‘Queer Squat’. The building was squatted in 2003 by members of ‘Anarquist’ and the ‘Ladidah’ network, a non-commercial alternative to Mardi-Gras. The residents were instrumental in the queer counterculture movement of the late 1990s and early 2000s, notably ‘Queeruption’ and ‘Behind Bars’, solidarity fundraisers for the international LGBTQ community. It also operated as a safe house for ‘gender refugees’ escaping homo/transphobic environments. The mural was painted on the side of the Georgian terrace shortly before the council served a final eviction notice on Valentine’s Day 2011.
